Old tobacco barns dot the landscape of rural Halifax County as reminders of the golden era of the bright leaf crop that flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries. Driving along the SoVA Wine Trail, the smell of ripened grapes replace that of dried leaves that was familiar not only along these roads but also in the picturesque town of South Boston where tobacco warehouses anchored each entrance. A tribute the history of the tobacco industry and an historical photographic retrospective on "a century of Fair" will be on exhibit during the Halifax County Fair 100th Anniversary, along with a wine tasting featuring wineries of the SoVA Wine Trail.
While tobacco is still a main agricultural crop, Halifax County features numerous destinations that include tree-lined walking tours in the historical towns of Halifax and South Boston; a driving tour along River Road that was the main stage-coach route from New York to New Orleans in the late 1700s and still features antebellum estates and a world-class resort; Revolutionary War and Civil War sites, technology-driven businesses, a performing arts center, and several three-star restaurants.
