5 Things to Celebrate in Halifax County

5 Things to Celebrate in Halifax County
FN iconic virginia food molasses grill baked oysters ham s4x3.jpg.rend.snigalleryslide

I think we all sometimes forget how special our Halifax County truly is. We get lost in the day-to-day hustle and bustle and forget to take a moment to celebrate the beautiful people, places, and attractions that make this area of Southern Virginia special. Here are five little reminders of what makes us so unique and worthy of celebration (in no particular order).

1. This week, Staunton River State Park plays hosts to a STAR PARTY! (Not an acronym, I'm just excited). No, Hollywood's A-listers are not descending upon Halifax County for the week. Instead, astronomers from across the country and WORLD are headed to Scottsburg for the week to look through powerful telescopes to observe celestial objects and other astronomical objects, learn from other astronomers, and attend lectures. What makes this so extra ordinary? Our very own Staunton River State Park is the site of some of the best observing in the mid-Atlantic, earning its designation as an INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY ASSOCIATION PARK. For an area to become a Dark Sky, it must provide a view of the night sky without the obstruction of light pollution. Strict regulations are in place to make sure our park keeps its status as an international dark sky. The week-long event is for astronomers ONLY, however, on Saturday, October 29, from 8-11 p.m., the park will host a FREE PUBLIC STAR PARTY.  Park staff and astronomers will be on hand to answer questions about stars, planets, galaxies, constellations, and other astronomical objects in a family-friendly environment.

Civil Rights Exhibit at Danvillian Gallery

1963 Exhibit

The 1963 Danville Civil Rights Movement: The Protests, the People, the Stories explores the civil rights protests, violence, and protracted legal struggle that gripped Danville during the summer of 1963, the fall campaign of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the role of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in the city.

The documentary exhibit features portraits by Charlottesville photographer Tom Cogill and text panels by Halifax County native Emma Edmunds, primary researcher for the project. The exhibit also includes text-and-photo panels on teachers in the movement, Dr. King and the SCLC in Virginia, and the white citizens who stood with and supported the Danville protesters.

A "Must Have" for Every Native and Resident

Architectural History of Halifax County

"This book, An Architectural History of Halifax County, is an amazing piece of deep research and writing that pulls together the narrative of buildings in a Southside county that many people might consider "rural," "out of the way," or deserving of only a "quick drive through." But, as Barbara Bass and members of the Halifax County Historical Society's Architectural Committee have shown, Halifax is a real treasure trove of architecture dating from the eighteenth century to the present, and the book should serve as a model for other counties, not just in Virginia but elsewhere." --Dr. Richard Guy Wilson, Commonwealth Professor in Architectural History at the University of Virginia

The book is a fascniating read filled with beautiful pictures  and histories of bulidings from the grand to the humble that create the history of Halifax County. The history of Halifax County can be traced back to American Indians and their surviving artifacts and the beginnings of English settlements in the mid-eighteenth century.
